Approach

I’m a relational therapist, meaning the interaction between client and therapist is used to help the client understand patterns in all of their relationships. This stems from the idea that psychological problems develop in past relationships and are healed through the connection between client and therapist. The two of us will explore how past patterns play out directly in the room.

I utilize an integrated therapeutic approach that blends theories, techniques, and philosophies from multiple psychological disciplines.

___

Primary orientations:

Psychodynamic therapy: Psychodynamic therapy is a form of talk therapy focused on exploring the individuals inner experience, focusing on deep-rooted patterns, past experiences, and unconscious processes that shape your present-day thoughts and relationships including what unfolds in your relationship with the therapist. Psychodynamic therapy aims to address the root causes of distress rather than just managing symptoms.

Attachment theory: Attachment theory is oriented to help clients understand how early childhood relationships shape their adult patterns of intimacy, conflict, and emotional regulation. The goal is to identify relational triggers, develop healthier coping strategies, and ultimately build a more secure foundation for interpersonal connections.

Existential philosophy: Existential therapy is a philosophically informed approach to counseling and focuses on understanding and raising self-awareness around the anxiety that occurs when confronting life’s inherent conflicts. It focuses on enhancing one's awareness of their inner experiencing, "subjectivity" or being through calling awareness to moment-to-moment thoughts, sensations and feelings.

___

Supplemental orientations:

‍ ‍Somatic Awareness: Somatic therapy is a holistic approach to mental health that focuses on the connection between the mind and body. It's based on the idea that our physical experiences and sensations are closely linked to our emotional and psychological well-being. This therapeutic approach aims to help individuals become more aware of their bodily sensations and use this awareness to process and release emotional or psychological issues.

‍ ‍Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidenced based modality that aims to empower clients to build their capacity for greater psychological and emotional presence. Rather than asking individuals to challenge their anxieties or silence challenging inner voices ACT invites us to accept these experiences, and then actively commit to living a meaningful, rewarding life in their continued presence.
